Whiting pioneer cabin

Updated: Aug 27, 2018

This cabin was built by Lorenzo Snow (Ren) Whiting when he and his family homesteaded in the Crystal, Idaho area in the early 1900s. With people homesteading the area, Crystal became a viable community with a church, store, and school. But when the depression hit, and after several years of drought, Ren's family moved on, most of them settling in Salmon, Idaho. Others also moved away, and Crystal is now only a memory that is part of a large dry farm.

This photo was taken August 11, 2018 when this and other historic family sites in Crystal were visited by descendants of Ren in connection with a family reunion held in Pocatello, Idaho, about 12 miles north of here.

On this website (see Histories and Research) you will find many documents describing the life and times of the families that lived in the Crystal area from about 1900 to 1930.
